What is a run flat tyre?
Run Flat tyres are designed specifically with a reinforced sidewall which helps the tyre to remain functional for a limited amount of time with no air pressure in the tyre. If you suffer a puncture while driving, the tyre will still be usable for around 80km. This gives you time to drive the car home, or to a nearby garage. One key safety component required when using Run Flat tyres is a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). With the TPMS, an alert is displayed on your console – letting you know that your vehicle has suffered a puncture and that you will need to replace the tyre as soon as possible.
How do run flat tyres work?
Run Flat tyres work by incorporating reinforced sidewalls that provide support and maintain the tyre’s shape, allowing the vehicle to be driven even with little or no air pressure.
Do not drive more than 80kms on a Run Flat that has had a puncture. It’s very important that you get the tyre changed as soon as you can. It’s recommended you do not travel more than 80km/h.
If punctured, the majority of manufacturers advise against repairing Run Flat tyres, as the integrity of the tyre may have been compromised if driven on.
